How to Access Polymarket: Countries, Restrictions & Workarounds

Polymarket is available in most of the world, but several major countries are restricted. This guide covers exactly where you can trade, what happens in restricted regions, and legal alternatives for those who can't access Polymarket directly.

Where Is Polymarket Available?

Polymarket operates as a decentralized prediction market accessible from approximately 180 countries worldwide. Unlike traditional betting platforms that require local licenses, Polymarket runs on blockchain infrastructure that's globally accessible by design.

If you can access the website, connect a wallet, and your IP address isn't from a restricted region, you can trade. However, several jurisdictions are explicitly blocked due to regulatory concerns:

Restricted Regions (Cannot Trade)

Americas

  • United States (all states)
  • Ontario, Canada

Europe

  • France
  • United Kingdom
  • Belgium
  • Switzerland
  • Poland

Asia-Pacific

  • Singapore
  • Thailand

Users from restricted regions who attempt to connect will see a compliance notice and trading functionality will be disabled. You can still browse markets, read comments, and view odds in "view-only" mode.

What Is View-Only Mode?

Even if you're in a restricted region, Polymarket allows view-only access. This means you can:

  • Browse all markets and see current prices/odds
  • Read market comments and community discussion
  • View historical price charts and trading volume
  • Follow specific markets to track price movements
  • Research markets before they resolve

View-only mode is valuable for research and tracking prediction market sentiment, even if you can't participate directly. Many journalists, researchers, and analysts use Polymarket data without trading.

How to Create an Account

For users in eligible regions, creating a Polymarket account takes under 3 minutes:

Method 1: Email/Google Sign-Up (Easiest)

  1. Visit polymarket.com
  2. Click "Sign Up" in the top right
  3. Choose "Continue with Email" or "Continue with Google"
  4. Verify your email address (check spam folder)
  5. A self-custodial wallet is automatically created for you

Method 2: Connect External Wallet

  1. Install a compatible wallet (MetaMask, Phantom, Rainbow, Coinbase Wallet)
  2. Visit polymarket.com and click "Connect Wallet"
  3. Select your wallet provider and approve the connection
  4. Sign a message to verify ownership (free, no gas cost)

Funding Your Account

Polymarket uses USDC (USD Coin) on the Polygon network. You have several funding options:

  • Credit/Debit Card — Buy USDC directly via integrated on-ramps (MoonPay, etc.). 3-5% fees.
  • Crypto Transfer — Send USDC from Coinbase, Binance, or other exchanges. Use the Polygon network.
  • Bridge from Ethereum — Use the Polygon Bridge to move existing USDC.

Minimum recommended starting balance: $50-100. This covers enough trades to learn the platform while keeping risk manageable.

VPN Usage: Risks and Warnings

Important Disclaimer

Using a VPN to access Polymarket from a restricted region violates Polymarket's Terms of Service. We do not recommend or endorse this practice.

Some users in restricted regions attempt to use VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) to mask their location and access trading functionality. While technically possible, this carries significant risks:

Risks of VPN Usage

  • Account Suspension — Polymarket actively detects VPN usage. If flagged, your account may be suspended and funds frozen pending review.
  • Permanent Ban — Repeated violations can result in permanent bans with no recourse for fund recovery.
  • Legal Liability — Circumventing geographic restrictions may violate local laws in addition to platform ToS.
  • No Customer Support — Users violating ToS have no standing to dispute account actions.
  • Withdrawal Issues — Attempting to withdraw funds may trigger additional compliance checks.

Polymarket uses multiple detection methods including IP analysis, browser fingerprinting, and behavioral patterns. Many VPN exit nodes are already blacklisted. Even if initial access works, accounts are often flagged during withdrawal attempts.

We strongly advise users in restricted regions to explore legal alternatives instead (see below).

Legal Status by Region

United States

The CFTC (Commodity Futures Trading Commission) classifies prediction markets as derivatives requiring registration. In January 2022, Polymarket settled with the CFTC for $1.4 million and agreed to cease US operations. Trading from US IP addresses is blocked, and Polymarket actively geo-fences US users.

France

French regulators (AMF) opened an investigation into Polymarket in late 2024 following surge in election-related trading. France blocks access pending regulatory clarity on whether prediction markets constitute illegal gambling or unregistered financial instruments.

United Kingdom

The UK Gambling Commission considers prediction markets a form of betting requiring a license. Polymarket chose to block UK users rather than pursue licensing, which would require significant compliance infrastructure.

European Union

EU regulation varies by country. Most EU nations allow access, but Belgium, Poland, and Switzerland have explicit restrictions. MiCA (Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation) may affect future availability as enforcement evolves.

Regulated US Alternative

In the US, Kalshi operates as a CFTC-regulated prediction market. While offering fewer markets than Polymarket, it provides legal access for US residents with full regulatory compliance.

Legal Alternatives to Polymarket

If you're in a restricted region, consider these legal alternatives:

Kalshi (US Only)

CFTC-regulated prediction market for US residents. Trade on elections, economics, weather, and more. Deposit via bank transfer or debit card. Lower volume than Polymarket but fully legal.

kalshi.com

PredictIt (US, Limited)

Academic prediction market operating under CFTC no-action letter. Focused on political markets. Note: PredictIt has faced regulatory challenges and may have limited availability.

predictit.org

Metaculus (Global, No Money)

Free forecasting platform focused on science, technology, and global events. No real-money trading, but excellent for building prediction skills and tracking calibration.
